PANJIM: The State Transport Department's decision to enforce wearing of helmet by riders on city and village roads, in addition to national and state highways, comes into force from April 1.
Transport director Arun Desai said that from April 1, the enforcement drive against non-wearing of helmets would be extended to village areas as it has been noticed that large number of accidents occur in villages.
Almost 65 percent of all road accident deaths involved two-wheeler riders in 2014.
"Our youngsters are on suicide mission. Rather then we enforcing use of helmets, people should prioritise self protection," Desai said, adding that of the total 189 deaths reported in 2014, 131 deaths caused due to non-wearing of helmets.
"These figures itself prove that lives would have been saved if the riders had worn helmets. I would like to appeal to people that RTO or traffic can enforce compulsory wearing of helmets, but finally it is up to the individuals to decide how crucial he or she is to his or her family," transport director added.
According to data, for the calendar year 2014, 290 people died, involving 189 riders and pillion riders. While the first half of the year – January to June – reported 170 deaths involving two-wheelers, 111 were riders and pillion riders while in the second half – July to December – 120 deaths were reported that include 78 riders and pillion riders.
